These authentic 19th-century dog gates originate from Gujarat, India, where they were traditionally positioned in front of the main entrance doors of village homes and urban havelis. Designed to keep livestock, dogs, and wandering animals from entering the household while maintaining ventilation and visibility, they represent a practical and distinctive element of traditional Gujarati architecture.
Constructed from solid teak and fitted with hand-forged iron bars, this pair displays a beautifully weathered pale green painted finish, softened through decades of exposure and use. The upper sections feature elegant pierced balustrade-style panels, lending an architectural quality to the design while providing decorative detail. The contrast between the aged paintwork, worn timber surfaces, and naturally patinated ironwork creates a characterful appearance that reflects the craftsmanship of rural western India.
Retaining their original form and rustic charm, these gates offer exceptional decorative versatility today. They can be repurposed as garden gates, interior room dividers, wall-mounted architectural features, or incorporated into bespoke design projects. Their combination of historic patina, traditional craftsmanship, and understated elegance makes them particularly appealing for both country and contemporary interiors.
