A fine late 19th century Indian brass bound jewellery box, beautifully constructed from richly patinated hardwood and retaining its original brass mounts, corner bindings and carrying handles. Compact yet substantial, this elegant chest would originally have served as a dowry box, used for storing precious textiles, family jewellery, documents and household valuables.

The warm tone and dense grain of the timber are complemented by the restrained brass bindings, which were designed both to strengthen the chest during travel and to elevate its decorative appearance. The clean, understated exterior gives the piece a refined utilitarian quality, while the original brass escutcheon and fittings further enhance its authenticity and character.

The interior is thoughtfully arranged with three fixed storage compartments, two of which retain their original hinged lids. These compartmentalised interiors were designed to safely organise jewellery, coins, keepsakes and other personal possessions. The generous central cavity provides additional storage while maintaining the elegant proportions of the chest.

Dowry and valuables chests of this type were widely used throughout India during the 19th century, often accompanying brides into marriage as symbols of prosperity and domestic security. Today they make excellent decorative storage pieces and are particularly well suited as coffee table chests or statement interior accents.

Like all our pieces, this jewellery box has been sympathetically restored and retains age-related wear, marks and patina consistent with its history and use.
