This elegant sideboard originates from Peking (Beijing) and follows a classic Ming dynasty design long favoured across North China. Its restrained, architectural form reflects the Ming aesthetic, with clean lines, balanced proportions, and an emphasis on the natural beauty of the timber. The long overhanging top, slightly upturned at each end, echoes the profile of traditional altar tables and hints at its likely role as both a storage piece and a family altar for ancestor worship.

Crafted in the 19th century during the Qing dynasty, the cabinet is constructed from yumu 榆木 (elm) with components in baimu 柏木 (cypress). It retains its traditional layout with three drawers above and a pair of central doors opening into a spacious interior. The original brass hardware has been replaced with traditional style circular brass fittings, including the large central lock plate and ring pulls. The warm, honey toned surfaces have developed a rich patina, with age worn areas that speak to its long history of domestic use.
