Bold, characterful, and richly symbolic, this 19th century painted cabinet from Qinghai province is a striking example of northern Chinese folk furniture. The front panels are decorated with powerful hand-painted tigers, their wide eyes and expressive faces rendered in warm ochres and earthy greens, while a coiled dragon motif animates the central doors. Together, these creatures symbolise strength, protection, and authority, motifs often used to guard domestic interiors and important possessions.

The cabinet retains its original dark lacquered ground, now beautifully worn with age, creating a deep, atmospheric patina that contrasts vividly with the painted decoration. The sides are traditionally carved with softly contoured edges, a regional detail typical of Qinghai furniture, adding sculptural presence and visual softness to the form. Timeworn surfaces, minor losses, and gentle wear all contribute to the authenticity and charm of this piece.

Opening the twin doors reveals a simple, practical interior consisting of one large storage space with a single shelf, suitable for linens, household items, or as a distinctive bar or hall cabinet.
