This carved red lacquer elm kang table comes from Shanxi Province and dates to the mid€“19th century. Kang tables were traditionally placed beside the heated brick or stone platform bed (kang) in northern Chinese homes, where they served as low tables for dining, tea, and writing. The warmth of the kang made these spaces the social and domestic heart of the home.

This example retains much of its original red lacquer and paintwork, now beautifully worn with age, giving it a rich, time-softened patina. The apron and drawer fronts are decorated with finely carved floral motifs, typical of Shanxi craftsmanship. With three practical drawers, it offers both charm and function€”ideal for use today at the end of a bed, or as a small table for a television, stereo, or other media storage.
