This beautifully rich & glossy ice red flambe vase is a Chinese reproduction piece made in Jingdezhen in the traditional way by hand. Yaobian translates to 'transmutation' and refers to the the variegated glaze effect which occurs as the glaze changes colour during the kiln firing process.

Red flambe was first developed in the 11th century and is created by mixing iron & copper. Flambe glazes were notoriously difficult and unpredictable to work with but highly decorative with varying effects. Developed in the Jingdezhen porcelain kilns during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722).
