This 19th century Indian window shutter is hand-painted with Radha and Krishna, one of the most celebrated divine couples in Hinduism. Krishna, instantly recognisable by his blue-black complexion, is depicted serenely playing his flute while Radha stands opposite in graceful devotion. Both figures stand upon lotus flowers, symbols of spiritual purity, enlightenment and transcendence, and are framed within finely painted cusped arches and delicate floral borders that reflect the decorative traditions of Rajasthan.
The story of Radha and Krishna represents the highest expression of divine love in Hindu philosophy. Their relationship is understood not simply as a romantic tale, but as an allegory for the soul's longing for union with the divine. Krishna's flute is traditionally understood to symbolise the divine call, drawing devotees towards spiritual love and union with the divine, while Radha embodies unwavering devotion, making their imagery one of the most enduring and meaningful themes in Indian art.
This example is distinguished by its beautifully painted green ground, intricately detailed arches and vibrant floral border, all of which survive with an attractive aged patina. The original iron latch remains in place, reinforcing its architectural origins, while the gentle wear, craquelure and surface losses speak to its long history of use. Whether displayed as a decorative wall piece or incorporated into a collection of Indian architectural antiques, it is both a striking work of folk art and a fascinating example of devotional painting.
