Walnut Bench From Shanxi - 19th Century

This authentic 19th century Chinese farm bench is crafted from a single thick plank of solid walnut using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws. Built for everyday life in rural China, benches of this type were indispensable pieces of furniture, serving as seating, work surfaces and dining benches within the farmhouse.

The generous walnut top displays a beautifully worn surface with a rich patina developed through generations of use. One side retains its natural bare timber, while the opposite face still bears traces of its original dark lacquer, offering a fascinating glimpse into the bench's history. The simple trestle-style construction, with its gently shaped brackets and ladder-braced legs, demonstrates the understated elegance and practicality that characterise traditional Chinese country furniture.
