This striking painted Tibetan door dates to around 1940 and would originally have formed part of a pair, possibly used within a temple or religious building. The panel is richly decorated with a dragon twisting amongst stylised clouds and foliage.
The decoration incorporates traditional Tibetan Buddhist motifs, including lotus flowers and auspicious jewels. The lower section is painted with stylised waves and mountain forms, adding to the dense symbolic decoration.
The original painted surface has developed a rich patina through age and use, with areas of wear adding considerable character to the piece. Originally one half of a pair, this door works equally well as an individual decorative panel or architectural feature.
