This evocative elm wood rice measure dates to the early 20th century and originates from Shanxi province in northern China. Robustly constructed and richly patinated, it reflects the utilitarian beauty of everyday rural objects made for agricultural life. Rice measures such as this were essential household and communal tools, used to portion grain accurately for storage, trade, and taxation.

The vessel is formed from thick vertical elm staves, bound tightly with hand-forged iron bands that both reinforce the structure and lend the piece its striking sculptural presence. The gently tapering form, iron strap fittings, and ring handles speak to a functional design refined through generations of use. The surface shows deep wear, softened edges, and tonal variation in the wood, all testament to its age and long working life.

Today, pieces like this are prized for their honest craftsmanship and strong architectural form. No longer purely functional, this rice measure works beautifully as a decorative object, umbrella stand, or planter, bringing a sense of history and quiet authenticity to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
