This striking early 20th-century sideboard originates from northern Shanxi province, close to the Mongolian border. Its long, low form reflects a Mongolian cabinet shape traditionally associated with nomadic interiors, while the painted decoration on the doors is distinctly Chinese in character, firmly rooted in Shanxi regional style.
The front features three pairs of doors, with the two outer panels decorated with floral paintings and the central panels depicting a softly rendered landscape scene. The cabinet retains its original mint-green painted surface, now beautifully aged and worn, revealing layers of history beneath. Internally, the piece has been adapted for modern use, with removable shelves providing practical storage. Originally, cabinets of this type would have opened from the top via a hatch rather than from the front, and were used variously for storing clothing and bedding, as grain cupboards, or as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
Both decorative and highly functional, this unusually long sideboard offers strong visual presence and excellent storage, making it well suited to use as a media unit, low sideboard, or statement piece in a contemporary interior.
