Vintage Kantha Quilt – Hand Stitched Textile from Bengal
This beautiful vintage Kantha textile is a vibrant celebration of one of India’s oldest and most enduring craft traditions. Hand-stitched by rural women using layers of repurposed cloth, each piece carries with it a rich sense of history, resourcefulness, and individual artistry. The intricate running stitch—known as “kantha”—binds the layers together while creating a subtly textured surface that is entirely unique to each quilt.
Originating in Bengal, Orissa, and Bangladesh, Kantha embroidery dates back centuries and is thought to predate even Vedic traditions. Traditionally made from worn saris and household fabrics, these textiles were lovingly stitched over time for domestic use, often passed down through generations. The result is a piece that is not only decorative but deeply personal and culturally significant.
This example features striking contrasting panels—one side with a richly patterned floral design in bold, lively colours, and the other with softer, more subdued tones—making it wonderfully versatile. Perfect as a throw, bedspread, or wall hanging, it brings warmth, texture, and a sense of heritage into any interior.
