Painted Tibetan Tiger Door - 1940'S

This striking painted Tibetan door dates to the 1940s and would originally have formed part of a temple or monastery.

The panel is dominated by a large tiger painted against a rich red ground, its body filling almost the entire height of the door. The tiger is depicted with a particularly expressive face, bright green eyes and an open mouth revealing its teeth. In Tibetan Buddhist symbolism, the tiger is associated with strength, confidence and the ability to overcome anger and develop wisdom and insight.

The decoration has been created in the traditional manner, with painted fabric applied over the wooden door. Age-related wear, cracking and losses to the painted surface give the piece a wonderfully authentic character and patina.

A highly decorative piece of Tibetan architectural art that works particularly well displayed as a wall panel.
