This old Tibetan thangka depicts Raktayamari embracing his consort Vajravetali in the yab-yum pose. This pose represents the unity of male compassion and female wisdom, essential for achieving enlightenment. Raktayamari is a a deity known as a yidam who presides over the great tantras, and subdues death and inner delusions.
Raktayamari's name literally means the "Red Enemy of Yama" and is a form of Yamāntaka. Both Raktayamari and his consort Vajravetali have a third eye symbolising trancendent wisdom and an all seeing awareness that destroys ego, death and ignorance.
This Tibetan thangka has been framed in a premium black lacquer and gilt frame.
