This 19th century Tianjin sideboard is crafted from richly figured burr camphor wood, a highly prized timber celebrated for its dramatic swirling grain, warm golden colour and natural durability. Originating from the port city of Tianjin in northern China, sideboards of this form evolved from Ming Dynasty furniture designs and were traditionally used both as storage cabinets and as altar tables for family ancestor worship.
The beautifully figured burr camphor gives this piece exceptional character, while the carved apron beneath the drawers features an intricate floral and geometric design inspired by traditional Chinese decorative motifs. Three generously sized drawers retain their original circular brass pulls, and below, a finely constructed open lattice shelf provides practical storage while adding visual lightness to the design.
Displaying a wonderful warm patina acquired over more than a century of use, this sideboard perfectly balances refined craftsmanship with everyday practicality. Its clean lines, beautiful timber and restrained decoration make it equally suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
