An excellent & extremely large antique Thai Rattanakosin (1782-1932) sitting Buddha dating to the early 19th century. Buddha sits atop a decorated lotus throne with a serene expression and meditative downcast eyes. As with early Rattanakosin castings, he has an ushnisha, a protuberance symbolising enlightenment & enthronement. This became less common in later Rattanakosin castings when crowns became more common. This came with influence from Europe when efforts were made to humanise Buddha.

Finely constructed from cast and carved bronze with gilding (gold plating) over red lacquer undercoats. Buddha sits in Dhyanasana mudra with his hands in Bhumisparsha mudra - the earth touching mudra, the moment of Buddha's awakening and enlightenment.

A similar later example can be found at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (17.116).

Condition & Provenance:

There are very minor losses to the casting on the base. The ushnisha has been replaced as is common. There is some wearing to the gilt which is clearly visible in photos. The gilding is stable. Purchased in 1999 from Asiatica, Bangkok.
