This beautifully carved and richly decorated majus dowry chest from Saurashtra, Gujarat, dates to the 19th century and is a fine example of this distinctive regional form. Raised on legs and elaborately worked on all sides, it combines practical storage with striking decorative presence, reflecting the importance of such pieces within traditional Indian domestic life.

The façade is adorned with finely carved Mughal-inspired floral and geometric patterns, interspersed with pierced lattice panels and punctuated by evenly spaced rounded studs. The surface retains layers of its original red painted finish, now beautifully worn and distressed, lending the piece a depth and warmth that only time can create. Carved horse head finials at the corners—an iconic feature of Saurashtra furniture—add a sculptural quality and reinforce its cultural identity.

Traditionally, majus chests were given as part of a bride’s dowry, symbolising wealth, status, and the promise of a prosperous marriage. Internally, the chest offers useful storage, making it as functional today as it is decorative—ideal as a statement sideboard, hallway piece, or storage cabinet in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
