This Teak Damchiya Dowry Chest from Kutch dating to the 1920s is a striking example of the richly carved marriage furniture traditionally made in the Kutch region of Gujarat. Damchiyas were an important part of a bride’s dowry and would accompany her to her new household after marriage. They were used to store clothing, jewellery and household valuables, while also acting as a visual symbol of family prosperity and craftsmanship.
The front of this chest is densely chip-carved in the traditional Kutch style, featuring geometric and floral motifs across the entire façade. At the centre are small cupboard doors, framed by panels of intricate openwork carving and decorative borders. Circular metal bosses and small mirrored inlays are set throughout the design, adding texture and subtle reflective highlights. On either side of the chest are finely carved standing figures, a distinctive decorative element commonly found on damchiyas from the region.
Raised on sturdy turned legs and constructed from solid teak, the chest retains a beautifully soft, timeworn patina that enhances the depth of the carving. Decorative yet practical, pieces like this work wonderfully today as sideboards, console cabinets or statement storage chests, bringing both history and craftsmanship into an interior.
