Originally used in front of the main entrance doors of traditional Gujarati havelis, these decorative dog gates served a practical purpose by preventing animals from entering the home while still allowing ventilation and visibility. Today they are highly sought after as architectural decorative pieces, equally suited as garden gates, wall-mounted artwork, or distinctive interior features.
This beautifully carved example is crafted from solid wood and retains a wonderfully weathered turquoise-painted finish that highlights the depth of the carving. The arched form is richly decorated with intricate floral and foliate designs, while a pair of finely carved parrots emerge amongst the scrolling foliage, a motif commonly associated with prosperity, beauty, and romance in Indian decorative arts. The openwork carving creates a delicate lace-like appearance, contrasting beautifully with the robust construction of the gate itself.
The gate displays an exceptional aged patina, with layers of paint worn back over time to reveal the timber beneath. Hangers have been attached to the rear, allowing the piece to be easily displayed as wall art, although it remains suitable for use as a decorative garden or courtyard gate.
