This rustic Chinese spring bench, dates to the 19th century and comes from Shanxi Province and is constructed from solid elm. Benches of this type were traditionally found outside shops and small restaurants in China, providing a convenient place for staff and customers to sit outdoors and enjoy the fresh air.
This particularly attractive example has a wonderfully weathered surface, with the grain and irregularities of the old elm giving the bench considerable character. Beneath the seat, the supports are decorated with beautifully carved scrolling cloud motifs, adding an elegant decorative element to an otherwise simple and practical piece of vernacular Chinese furniture.
The bench retains the characteristic splayed legs found on these traditional pieces, joined by stretchers for additional strength. Its long, narrow proportions make it particularly versatile, equally suited to a hallway, kitchen or dining area, or positioned at the end of a bed.
