Elegant in both form and function, this late 19th century Chinese spring bench comes from Shanxi Province in Northern China. These long elm benches were once a familiar sight outside shops, tea houses and small restaurants, where they provided a place for staff and customers to sit, chat and enjoy the fresh air.
Crafted from solid elm, the bench is beautifully decorated with finely carved cloud motifs beneath the seat, lending an otherwise practical piece a sense of refinement. The seat retains areas of its original dark lacquer, now softly worn with age, creating a striking contrast against the weathered natural wood. This layered patina tells the story of decades of use and gives the bench a warmth and authenticity that cannot be replicated.
Its generous proportions make it equally suited to a long dining table, an entrance hall or as a decorative accent beneath a window. Combining elegant carving with honest wear, this is a timeless example of Chinese provincial furniture.
