An exceptional 19th century Anglo-Burmese military chest, richly crafted from solid teak and intricately inlaid with etched brass wire decoration throughout. Combining practicality with extraordinary craftsmanship, this rare campaign chest retains its original brass fittings, carrying handles and decorative mounts, all beautifully aged alongside the deep patina of the teak.
Traditionally commissioned by officers of the British Indian Army, Anglo-Burmese military chests were built to endure the demands of long-distance travel across the Indian subcontinent and Burma. Unlike many Anglo-Indian examples, Burmese military chests of this type are distinguished by their delicate brass wire inlay work, featuring scrolling motifs, geometric borders and symbolic elephant imagery. The reverse is notably decorated with crossed flags and elephants beneath the inscription “M.D.Y Box”, adding further character and individuality to the piece.
The interior is particularly elaborate, featuring a finely carved fitted lid with inset mirror, hidden compartments and floral carved drawers surrounding a removable central section. The large lower compartment provides generous storage, while the original support chain prevents strain on the hinges when opened. Historic repairs and age-related wear throughout only enhance the authenticity and story of this remarkable chest.
A rare and decorative example of colonial campaign furniture, equally suited as a statement coffee table or collector’s piece.
