Small Brass Buddha Varada Mudra

This finely detailed brass Buddha is seated in meditation upon a double lotus throne, with an elaborate patterned robe covering the left shoulder and falling around the body. 

The Buddha's right hand extends downwards in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity, compassion and the granting of blessings. The left hand rests in the lap holding an alms bowl, while beside the lowered right hand is a flowering plant, attributes associated with Bhaiṣajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha.

Within Buddhist tradition, the Medicine Buddha represents the healing of both physical and spiritual suffering. 

The figure is particularly attractive for its intricate detailing. The robe is covered with finely worked geometric and scrolling patterns, while the tightly curled hair, elongated earlobes and serene downcast expression retain the calm symmetry characteristic of Buddhist sculpture.
