An exceptional Japanese six-fold byōbu screen dating to the Taishō period and painted in 1924 by the artist Tetsuzan, also known as Hariyama Senshi. Executed in sumi ink on a luminous silver leaf ground, the composition is dominated by a magnificent flowering plum tree whose twisting trunk and delicate blossoms spread gracefully across the panels. Emerging from rocky outcrops below, slender bamboo sprays provide a subtle counterpoint to the strength and age of the ancient tree.

The restrained monochromatic palette exemplifies the elegance of Japanese ink painting, where expressive brushwork and tonal variation convey both atmosphere and movement. To one side, a lengthy poetic inscription celebrates the beauty of blossoms flourishing beneath the cold moonlight, reflecting themes of resilience, renewal, and the fleeting nature of beauty that are deeply embedded within Japanese artistic tradition.

Signed by the artist at the age of seventy-seven and dated Taishō 13 (1924), this impressive screen represents both a decorative statement and an important example of early twentieth-century Japanese literati painting. The expansive silver leaf surface interacts beautifully with changing light, creating a serene and contemplative presence whether displayed in a traditional or contemporary interior.
