Description

This late 19th-century elm sideboard from Peking (modern-day Beijing), China, is a wonderful example of traditional northern Chinese furniture, combining the elegant simplicity of Ming-inspired design with practical storage and beautifully aged craftsmanship.

Constructed from solid elm, the sideboard features a distinctive long, overhanging top with gracefully upturned scroll ends, giving the piece a strong architectural presence. The gently curved ends are supported by shaped brackets beneath, while the clean lines and balanced proportions reflect the enduring influence of Ming dynasty furniture design.

The front is arranged with three drawers, each fitted with a circular brass ring handle, above a pair of panelled cupboard doors. These are decorated with traditional circular brass fittings and a central locking arrangement. The removable central locking bar allows easier access to the generous interior storage space.

Sideboards of this type were traditionally found in homes throughout Peking and the surrounding regions of northern China. They served as useful storage cabinets for household belongings and were also sometimes used as family ancestral altar tables, with offerings, incense burners and other ceremonial objects arranged across their broad upper surfaces.

The elm has developed a wonderfully rich, warm reddish-brown patina, with striking natural grain patterns, subtle variations in colour and the gentle surface wear acquired over more than a century of use.

Today, this versatile antique sideboard would make a beautiful addition to a dining room, hallway or sitting room. Its generous surface is ideal for displaying ceramics, lamps or decorative objects, while the drawers and cupboard provide valuable everyday storage.
