This exquisite lacquer pot originates from Barmer, a desert town in western Rajasthan close to the Sindh border. Dating to the late 19th century, it is an exceptional example of traditional Indian scratchwork lacquerware, renowned for its vivid colour and intricate hand-carved surface designs.
The floral motifs have been delicately incised through the upper lacquer layers to reveal contrasting tones beneath, producing a striking decorative effect. Lacquer pots such as this were traditionally used in Rajasthan and Gujarat to store jewellery or bindi powder — the red pigment worn on the forehead.
Each pot was hand-turned on a simple lathe, with coloured sticks of lac applied by friction to deposit a thin layer of glowing colour. The deep reds, blacks, and ochres of this piece remain wonderfully vibrant despite its age, and the surface has acquired a soft, timeworn sheen that enhances its folk-art charm.
