This small 19th-century Zanzibar chest is a classic example of the studded trade chests made in the Rann of Kutch for use along the historic dhow routes of the Indian Ocean. Crafted from richly patinated rosewood, it would once have carried valuable commodities such as pepper, cloves, Indian cotton textiles, and gemstones between major ports including Diu, Surat, Basra, Zanzibar, and Bombay. This particular chest was sourced directly from Kutch, the region most renowned for producing these robust and beautifully decorated pieces.
The exterior is adorned with traditional brass studs arranged in geometric and circular motifs, along with brass corner mounts and strapping for reinforcement during travel. Iron lifting handles sit on each side, and the interior includes a small candle box—a practical feature typical of authentic trade chests. Its deep, timeworn surface, ironwork, and hand-forged mounts all contribute to its character as a genuine working chest from the 19th-century trade networks of Western India.
