This elegant 19th century lacquer wedding cabinet from Shanxi Province is a wonderful example of traditional Chinese furniture, combining practical storage with beautifully preserved decorative artistry. Wedding cabinets such as this were traditionally presented as part of a bride's dowry and were often made in matching pairs, symbolising prosperity and a harmonious marriage. Crafted from elm, a timber favoured for high-quality northern Chinese furniture, the cabinet retains its original red and black lacquer finish with finely painted decoration that has acquired a rich patina through age and use.
The two doors are beautifully adorned with original hand-painted scenes depicting elegant waterfowl amongst lotus flowers, flowering plants and foliage beside a tranquil waterside landscape. Delicate floral borders frame the composition, while the lower front panel is decorated with a collection of traditional scholarly objects, reflecting the refined culture and learning associated with the Chinese scholar-gentry. The cabinet is fitted with its original brass lock plate and drop handles, completing its authentic appearance.
Inside, the cabinet provides generous storage with a full-width shelf dividing the interior and two small drawers positioned beneath it. A concealed compartment hidden beneath a removable lower panel offers additional secure storage, a thoughtful feature often incorporated into fine Chinese cabinetry.
