This vibrant red lacquered sideboard hails from Dongbei (Manchuria) and dates to the 1920s. Characterised by its handpainted floral motifs, it exemplifies the artistry of northern Chinese decorative furniture. The piece was traditionally used in domestic rituals, often placed beneath a hanging ancestor portrait and adorned with daily offerings of joss sticks, its surface serving both functional and spiritual roles. The brilliant cinnabar-red lacquer, delicate painted detailing, and original brass fittings speak to its ceremonial significance and regional identity.
The cabinet is constructed from elm wood, finished in layers of lacquer typical of the region, with ornate floral scenes across the doors and lower frieze panels. A true collector's piece with a warm patina and minor age-related wear consistent with its heritage.
