This striking lacquered sideboard was made in Dongbei (Manchuria) in the 1920s. Finished in a vivid red lacquer and decorated with painted floral and bird motifs, it reflects the traditional artistry of north-eastern China. The bold colour and symbolic decoration were believed to bring prosperity and good fortune to the household.
These sideboards were often used in a similar way to altar tables. A family ancestor portrait would typically be hung above, while joss sticks were lit and placed daily on the top surface to ensure the well-being of the household. The double doors open to reveal generous interior storage, making this both a functional and highly decorative piece of Chinese furniture.
