These exceptional antique doors from Bikaner, Rajasthan date from the late 18th century and are richly decorated with hand-painted floral motifs set against a deep black glazed ground. Framed by intricate scrolling vines and stylised blossoms, the central panels feature symmetrical arrangements of marigolds, roses and flowering foliage radiating from a tree of life composition, a motif long associated with prosperity, renewal and paradise gardens throughout the Persianate world.

The remarkable surface decoration reflects the artistic exchanges that flourished between Rajasthan, the Mughal courts and Persia during the 18th century. Their dark lacquer-like finish, warm terracotta and crimson palette, delicate gilt detailing and refined floral ornament strongly recall the decorative arts of the Qajar period, while remaining firmly rooted in the architectural traditions of western India. The reverse retains its original red-painted finish, offering a striking contrast to the richly embellished front.

Founded by Rao Bika in the late 15th century, Bikaner developed into one of Rajasthan's most sophisticated artistic centres, benefiting from close ties to the Mughal court and extensive trade connections across Central Asia and Persia. These doors embody that rich cultural heritage, combining robust Rajasthani craftsmanship with an elegant decorative language influenced by Persian manuscript painting, lacquer work and courtly ornament.

Whether incorporated architecturally into a home or displayed as a monumental work of art, these doors create a dramatic focal point. Their impressive scale, symmetry and richly preserved painted surface make them particularly suited to entrance halls, dining rooms, galleries or layered interiors where antique architectural elements are celebrated as sculptural artworks.
