This elegant blue and white porcelain jar is decorated in a late Ming provincial style with a hand-painted fish motif, inspired by traditional Chinese folk ceramics. The softly rounded form, gently everted rim, and painterly brushwork give the piece a relaxed, authentic character that echoes historic storage jars made for everyday domestic use.
Fish imagery has long held auspicious meaning in Chinese culture. The word for fish, yu, is a homophone for “abundance” and prosperity, while a fish swimming in water traditionally symbolised harmony and happiness within marriage. These symbolic associations made fish a popular decorative motif on household ceramics.
Produced in Jingdezhen—the historic heart of Chinese porcelain production since 1004 AD—this jar is part of our high-quality reproduction range. Jingdezhen has been home to the famous imperial kilns since the Ming dynasty, and artisans there continue to use traditional techniques to create pieces that honour historic forms and designs. It is ideal for use as a decorative vessel or planter, particularly for orchids or trailing plants.
