This colourful and characterful Indian tiger figurine dates to the early 20th century, between 1900 - 1920 and was made and painted in Surat. Surat was one of the main trading posts for the British in India and found new prosperity with the opening of India's railways exporting silks, gold & silver across the globe. Production of these figurines began in the mid 19th century with an example from 1965 on display in the V&A museum.
Tigers have been a symbol of India for over 5000 years and remain so to this day. The figure features intricate polychrome work and is full of character and would make a wonderful decorative ornament or gift. At over one hundred years old, it still retains its vibrant colour and intricate detailing.
