This colourful and characterful Indian antique elephant and mahout figure dates to the 19th century and was made and painted in Surat. Surat was one of the main trading posts for the British in India and found new prosperity with the opening of India's railways exporting silks, gold & silver across the globe.

The figure is polychrome work with beautiful textured paintwork simulating the textiles which regularly adorn Elephants in India. The elephant is adorned with classic Indian pattern designs while the rider (known as a 'Mahout') has wonderful detailing. A unique decorative piece.
