Description

This white marble Bi disc is hand-carved and polished in China, inspired by the ancient Chinese jade discs that have been treasured for thousands of years. Beautifully displayed on a simple black iron stand, its circular form and gently swirling carved decoration create a striking sculptural piece that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors.

The disc is carved from white marble with delicate natural grey veining, giving each piece its own individual character. A series of curving, radiating grooves sweeps outwards from the central opening, creating a subtle sense of movement across the polished stone. The contrast between the soft white marble and the minimalist black iron stand enhances its understated appearance.

Bi discs are among the most recognisable forms of ancient Chinese ritual jade. Dating back to the Neolithic period, examples have been discovered in burials associated with the Hongshan culture (circa 3800–2700 BC) and later the Liangzhu culture. Traditionally fashioned from jade, these circular discs with central openings were important ceremonial objects, often placed in tombs alongside the deceased.

Although their precise original significance remains uncertain, Bi discs have long been associated with the heavens, eternity and spiritual harmony. In later Chinese tradition, their circular form came to symbolise the sky, while the discs themselves were regarded as auspicious objects representing good fortune and protection.

This contemporary reproduction is individually carved and polished by hand in China, drawing inspiration from these ancient ceremonial forms. Mounted on its black iron display stand, it makes a wonderfully decorative statement on a console table, shelf or mantelpiece.
