Painting Of Kali Trampling Shiva - Jaipur School - 19th Century

    A01941

    £1,250

This Indian 19th century Jaipur school gouache painting depicts Kali trampling a prostrate Shiva. The Hindu goddess Kali became enraged that many demons and asuras had begun dominating the world. In a fury, Kali went into a bloodlust and slaughtered everything. Her husband and lord of the gods, Shiva went to stop her rage, but nothing would could stop her. In desperation, he threw himself beneath her feet. As she began to trample him, her trance was broken, saving the universe from total destruction.
