This beautifully painted 19th century Indian window shutter depicts Radha and Krishna, one of the most revered divine couples in Hinduism. Krishna, instantly recognisable by his blue complexion, is shown serenely playing his flute while Radha stands opposite in graceful devotion. Beneath Krishna stands Nandi, the sacred bull traditionally associated with Lord Shiva, whose presence introduces an intriguing layer of symbolism and reflects the rich blending of religious imagery often found in Indian folk and devotional art. The figures are framed within elegant cusped arches inspired by Mughal architecture, creating a balanced and harmonious composition.

The story of Radha and Krishna represents the highest expression of divine love in Hindu philosophy. Their relationship is understood not simply as a romantic tale, but as an allegory for the soul's longing for union with the divine. Krishna's flute is said to call all souls towards spiritual awakening, while Radha embodies unwavering devotion, making their imagery one of the most enduring and meaningful themes in Indian art.

Painted in rich mineral pigments against a deep olive-green ground, the shutter retains its original iron hinges and latch, together with the honest wear and patina expected of a piece of this age. Originally part of an architectural interior, it now serves as a striking piece of wall art, bringing history, colour and spiritual symbolism to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
