Painted Torgam From Tibet - 19th Century

This rare 19th-century Tibetan painted torgam was made as a sacred reliquary cabinet, traditionally used for housing precious Buddhist statues, ritual objects or relics. Pieces of this type were created not simply as storage, but as devotional furnishings, with their painted decoration carrying symbolic and spiritual significance.

The exterior is richly decorated with a combination of floral and tantric motifs, together with imagery associated with Tibetan Buddhist cosmology. Among the painted designs are dragons, Mount Meru, sacred jewels and a conch shell, each carrying auspicious or religious meaning within Tibetan tradition. The overall effect is wonderfully bold and theatrical, with the aged painted surface adding considerable character.

The conch shell is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism and represents the spreading of the Buddha's teachings, while Mount Meru occupies a central place in Buddhist cosmology as the sacred mountain at the centre of the universe. Dragons and jewel motifs are likewise associated with protection, power, prosperity and sacred abundance.

With its unusual form, richly symbolic decoration and strong presence, this is an increasingly rare piece of Tibetan devotional furniture and an exceptional object for a collector of Buddhist art or Tibetan artefacts.
