Description

This striking painted Tibetan door dates to the 1940's and is decorated with two fierce tigers facing one another against a rich red ground. The animals are boldly painted in warm ochre tones, with exaggerated eyes and expressions typical of Tibetan decorative painting. These doors were mostly made in Nepal in the early to mid part of the 20th century.

The door knocker and hinges are painted using kyung bur (raised gesso) technique. The door knocker depicts Zeeba (also known as Zipak or Kirtimuka), a protector demon.  The stylised door hinges are decorated with auspicious symbols, The Wheel of Dharma & the sun.

The original painted surface has developed a rich patina through age and use, while the reverse retains its simple timber construction. Today, the door would make an impressive decorative wall panel or architectural feature.
