This beautifully naïvely painted 19th-century Indian window shutter originates from Rajasthan and depicts Radha and Krishna, one of the most enduring subjects in Hindu art. Krishna is immediately recognisable by his distinctive blue complexion, while Radha stands opposite him. The figures are framed beneath elegant cusped arches and surrounded by painted floral borders.

Shutters such as this would originally have enclosed a small wall alcove or shrine within a wealthy haveli or palace. This style of painted architectural decoration is particularly associated with Bikaner, although variations were produced throughout Rajasthan.

Radha and Krishna together symbolise divine love and devotion. Their relationship is understood in Hindu tradition as an allegory for the soul's longing for union with the divine, with Radha representing complete devotion to Krishna.

The shutter retains its original iron latch and has been conserved and restored in our UK workshops. Centuries of wear, losses to the painted surface and repairs have given the piece a wonderfully characterful patina. No longer serving its original architectural purpose, it now makes a striking piece of wall art.
