Painted Sideboard From Gansu - Early 19thC

This Gansu sideboard dates to the early 19^th century and has its original painting. Unusually it is also painted on the sides. The front of the piece is decorated with traditional scholarly objects. The bottom skirting is painted with delicate flowing floral designs. The sides have been painted with plants and Chinese script.

 The three doors open to reveal a large area with a single shelf. 

These cabinets were used by nomadic people for storage of clothes and bedding or grain although they were also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. Originally, this piece would have originally been top opening via two hatches. It has since been converted to front opening for use in a contemporary home.
