This incredibly decorative painted antique Mongolian sideboard originates from northern China, associated with the regional traditions of Inner Mongolia and Shanxi, and dates to the late 19th century. Furniture from this northern region often reflects a dialogue between robust Mongolian forms and the more refined visual language of Han Chinese decorative painting.
Originally, this type of furniture was typically used for the storage of grain, textiles, or bedding and would have opened from the top. As is common with surviving examples, this piece has been sensitively adapted: the fixed front panel has been converted into doors and the top sealed, allowing it to function practically as a sideboard while retaining its original character and proportions.
The original painted decoration is the true highlight of this piece. The doors feature a charming painted scene of flowers and branching foliage, executed in a style closely associated with late Qing vernacular Han Chinese furniture. The surrounding frame is finished in a deep, rich black, with traces of earlier paint layers visible along the kickboard, adding depth, texture, and a strong sense of authenticity. Inside, the generous storage space is divided by a single fixed shelf.
