Painted Radha Krishna Window Shutter - 19th Century

This exceptional 19th century Indian window shutter is hand-painted with Radha and Krishna, one of the most celebrated divine couples in Hinduism. Krishna, instantly recognisable by his blue-black complexion, is depicted serenely playing his flute while Radha stands opposite in graceful devotion. Both figures stand upon lotus flowers, symbols of spiritual purity, enlightenment and transcendence, and are framed by an elegant cusped arch surrounded by exquisitely painted scrolling floral vines.

The story of Radha and Krishna represents the highest expression of divine love in Hindu philosophy. Their relationship is understood not simply as a romantic tale, but as an allegory for the soul's longing for union with the divine.
