This fabulously decorative chest has been reduced in depth and has had two doors added to create an exotic and unusual sideboard.  Teak with hand forged iron banding, it has been repainted with traditional Indian designs.  In it's previous life this 19thC chest was used to store dowry and was known as a pithara.

This style of pithara is from a Kathi home in Saurashtra and was known in the local dialect as a pataro. The Kathi were a ruling caste in Saurashtra and these chests would have contained a grand dowry. It is perfect for the storage of bedding for occasional guests.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India. They were used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewellery, and cash.
