This vintage painted sideboard from Mongolia was made in the 1910's. This piece has original floral painting on a beautiful orange/red background. These cabinets were used by nomadic people in Mongolia & neighboring southern Shanxi province for storage of clothes and bedding or grain. This piece is likely from the Mongolian, Shanxi border area. Also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.
Â
The front doors have been modified from the original closed front to make it more functional. Originally, these sideboards would have opened only from the top, but this one still has the original opening hatches. Beneath the main storage compartment are two large drawers.Â
The four front doors and top hatches open outwards to reveal a large interior storage space separated by a simple shelf.Â
