This striking architectural panel from Kutch, Gujarat dates from the 19th century and combines a central interior door with beautifully carved jali screens framed within a substantial timber surround. Retaining layers of original turquoise, blue-green and natural wood tones, the weathered surface displays the rich patina that only develops through decades of use, creating a wonderfully textured and characterful appearance.

The finely carved jali latticework is a hallmark of traditional architecture across western India, where perforated screens were used to encourage airflow while maintaining privacy and filtering harsh sunlight. The repeating geometric pattern creates an elegant interplay of light and shadow, while the robust construction and hand-forged iron ring handles reflect the practical craftsmanship of the region.

Originating from Kutch, an area renowned for its distinctive architectural traditions and skilled woodworkers, this piece embodies the understated beauty of vernacular Indian design. The faded painted finish, visible layers of colour and honest signs of age contribute to its authenticity, making it equally appealing as an architectural salvage element or as a sculptural decorative object.

Structurally sturdy and highly versatile, the panel can be incorporated into an interior as a room divider, fitted architecturally as a doorway, or displayed as a dramatic wall-mounted artwork. Its impressive scale, geometric detailing and beautifully aged finish make it particularly suited to contemporary, rustic and eclectic interiors where antique architectural elements are celebrated as works of art.
