Painted Archway From Kutch - Late 19th Century

This spectacular painted architectural archway originates from Kutch, Gujarat, and dates to the late 19th century. Its design is a wonderful blend of Victorian influence and traditional Indian craftsmanship, reflecting the decorative exchange of styles that developed during the British Raj.

The substantial wooden structure is divided into three openings with elegant Mughal-inspired scalloped arches, richly painted in turquoise, yellow, pink, red, blue and green. The spandrels are decorated with large painted flowers and celestial motifs, including the sun and crescent moon.

Four carved and painted female figures sit at the upper ends of the supports, each holding what appears to be a musical instrument. Above, the central crest is particularly striking, with a pair of beautifully carved peacocks facing one another on either side of a decorative finial. Turned and twisted columns, small balustrades and layers of carved architectural detailing complete the design.

The original paint has naturally worn and distressed over more than a century, revealing earlier layers and the timber beneath. This wonderful patina gives the archway much of its character while preserving its extraordinarily vibrant palette.

A rare and highly decorative piece of Gujarati architecture, its impressive scale would make it an exceptional entrance, room divider or architectural feature.
