This beautiful painted Indian shutter depicts Krishna & Radha. This style of painting is distinctly from Bikaner in Rajasthan and is only found there. It dates to the 19th century and depicts Radha & Krishna, a metaphor for eternal and sublime romantic love. What is particularly interesting is the presence of glass hanging handi lanterns above their heads. These lights were imported from Belgium in the 19th century.

The Krishna & Radha story is deeply popular in India often found in Bikaner paintings. Often called 'Radha Krishna', it is a romantic tale depicting the beauty of romantic and physical love. Radha was already married and they engaged in a passionate intermarital affair transcending traditional mortal relationships and morality. The subject has become more secular than religious and symbolises the union between the human soul and the divine.

This shutter would have been plastered into the wall with a cavity for storing keepsakes.

Supplied with sturdy wall hangers.
