Original Painted Tibetan Door - 19th Century

This vibrant antique Tibetan door is painted with the central motif of four auspicious animals circling the Wheel of Dharma, a symbol of Buddha & his teachings.

The Wheel of Dharma was said to be fashioned from pure gold from the Jambud river, while the yin-yang symbol in the center depicts a 'swirl of joy'. It symbolises Buddha's teachings of wisdom, ethics, and concentration. The wheel was often used in Tibetan painting by Buddha himself. 

The Three Victorious Creatures of Harmony merges traditional predator and prey animals. The Makara-conch (top right), Fish-otter (bottom right), and Garuda-Snow Lion (bottom left). A Qilin is featured (top left) which is more commonly found in Chinese symbolism. All of these creatures feature in Tibetan temple paintings and on thangkas. 

At the base of the door is Mount Mandara rising from a churning ocean. This Mount is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains. Precious jewels and a conch can be seen floating in the waters, the latter spreading wisdom and the words of Buddha's teachings. 

The two pyramids of three jewels in the ocean represent the body, speech, and mind of all the Buddhas, while the group at the top are Tibetan wish-granting jewels (chintamani).
