This charming 19th-century carved teak Nandi bull originates from Andhra Pradesh and was once part of a traditional wooden toy. Representing Nandi, the sacred bull and devoted mount of Lord Shiva, the piece reflects the deep connection between everyday village life, craftsmanship and religious symbolism in India.
Hand-carved from a single piece of teak, the bull is decorated with simple geometric motifs and retains a wonderfully tactile, folk-art quality. Originally fitted with wheels, traces of its former construction remain visible, offering a fascinating glimpse into its past as a children's toy or ceremonial object. Decades of handling have created a rich, warm patina that enhances the character of the aged timber.
Nandi holds a revered place in Hindu tradition as a symbol of strength, devotion and protection. Today, this sculptural piece makes a distinctive decorative object and an appealing addition to collections of Indian folk art, tribal artefacts and antique toys.
